Leading Nurses

A nursing education, practice and retention initiative federally-funded from 2009 to 2012. Leading Nurses was a collaboration between Kendal Outreach and Widener University to improve quality of care provided in nursing homes through the development of directors of nursing and registered nurse (RN) leaders in 30 long-term care facilities within Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Through a series of 12 full-day classes held at Widener University, 60 nurses, two from each site, were educated in four areas:

  1. emotional intelligence and resilience training;
  2. leadership skill development;
  3. change management skills; and,
  4. evidence-based clinical protocols for implementation in their facilities.

Combined with these didactic sessions, a series of mentoring opportunities with Leading Nurses’ faculty was offered at Widener University.
